As part of a major borough-wide works programme to improve street lighting and make it more energy-efficient, Milton Keynes Council was looking to upgrade the lighting in two heritage lanterns on Tickford Bridge with LED technology.

Constructed in 1810, Tickford Bridge which is 7.62 metres wide and spans 17.68 metres over the River Ouzel in Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire is one of the last remaining iron bridges in Britain and is also believed to be the oldest working cast iron bridge in the world.

The landmark is Grade 1 listed, which meant the only way to replace the legacy energy-hungry lighting was with a retrofit solution that would enable the existing lanterns to be retained.

LED and solar-powered lighting experts Zeta Specialist Lighting, worked with the council’s contractor Ringway Infrastructure Services, to provide the company’s innovative Heritage conversion kits. Heritage is a wholly flexible retrofit solution, Zeta’s intelligent design means that the integrated engine can be engineered to fit into a vast range of different lantern shapes and size, making it the perfect solution for Tickford Bridge’s legacy heritage lanterns.

Adrian Dennis, Managing Director, Zeta Specialist Lighting said:

“LEDs are playing a key role in enabling street and area lighting providers to realise significant energy savings as well as enhance public safety and security, thanks to their ability to provide accurate, targeted illumination. We were delighted to work with Ringway on this project, bringing all of the benefits of this more efficient lighting technology whilst still retaining the all-important historic features on this iconic landmark.”
